Xian
Xian is know mainly for the Terra Cotta Warriors We weere surprised at the size of the town according to our guide the city has 7 million people; we are not sure of this but it is a large city, bigger than you would imagine, which is true for most China cities. Xian pronounced "she ann' is a pretty city at night downtown by the bell tower where you will find everything that you might want including McDonalds and Kentucky fried Chicken. We spent a lot of time at the stickman which is just a street stall that we named by the bell tower, which had Chineese satay, as well as a breaded chicken that was deep fried, very good and cheap at only 2 Yuan. There is a lot of choices for the night market food that comes out after 9PM.
We spent only two days in Xian the first day we spent getting sorted to go to Lhasa which took us only 5 hours from begging to end. I understand that we did it rather fast and got a couple of lucky breaks, the first lucky break was going in to talk to Bob at Bob's Guesthouse, his information was timely and right on We found Bobs on our way to the train station Talking to him saved us at least a day for the process as he called the guy that arranges the permit for Lhasa and the guy was waiting for us and we got the permit in 90 minuites normally it is suppose to take a day but we pleaded no time and he did what he needed to do to get it to us before the close of bussiness See this page for the Lhasa Permit step by step with maps to ticket office and train station. I might add that good information is hard to get on this we were told by some that there is a 3 year waiting list but we booked ours 2 days out durring a very busy Chinese travel period around Chinesse New Year.
We stayed at the Defachang hotel which would normally be around 330 yuan but we talked them down to 168 as it was low season in early March which was a bit nippy. The De fa changwas a good discount Hotel in Xian with large quite rooms only a shower f that is important to you there was plenty of hot water and the heat was OK. One interesting thing is that you might get calls in the night fromthe massage staff I suspect that a massage with a happy ending will be offered.
