Beijing China

Beijing is a rather large city with 13 million inhabitants spread out over a vast area, but still if you are up for it you can do a lot of it on the cheap. Everything emanates from the center of town which in Beijing is from the imperial palace. Form the excellent small restaurants, to the many shops to the railway and bus stations, Beijing is an absolutely fascinating place to walk around and people watch.

The Chinese for the major attractions have the prices set for everybody so you do not get special tourist prices, and a lot of the prices are written down for you to see in places that you might not expect like hotels. The temples and the tourist spots have many Chinese there visiting them as well, so this also helps to keep the prices down. Surprisingly taxis were expensive, and the buses a little hard to understand, but the metro is a breeze to use and cheap at only 3 Yuan a trip. Using only the metro does limit you a bit when you go out to the outer rings, but in the city center it will get you everywhere.

The first thing that we tried to do was go to the great wall at Badaling using the buses only to find out after a day that the buses were incorporated into a tourist service, and the buses we were looking for were no longer named what was on the tourist map. We spent the better part of the day looking for them but we still had a great time as it took us place that we probably would not have gone if we were not looking, like a side street that paralleled the Forbidden City, that was a neighborhood of hutongs, which are large squares with a wall around them that will have a few families living inside almost like a apartment complex. These neighborhoods would have most of the daily necessities sold there from pharmacies to vegetable markets and general stores full of some very interesting things and smells. When we were here we did sort of feel like we were intruding into there personals lives there are also little restaurants and you get the full feel for life as the wives berate the husbands, the young lovers huddle together, and the grandparents stroll along showing off the next generation. You will need to take a special tourist bus to get the great wall or a taxi. I will be posting an article called the Great Wall at Badaling that details that trip by taxi if you are interested.
