Mola Mola Bali Diving for Sunfish Dive Indonesia

Nusa Penida dive Bali

Bali Mola Mola are a large oceanic pelagic fish and mostly swim in very  deep water, However scuba diving in Bali you can see the sunfish come in for cleaning at cleaning stations around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembangan islands off the coast of Bali.  You will see schools of schooling banner butterfly hanging out, these fish are waiting for the Mola Mola to come in and cleaning. Mola Mola sometimes call sunfish a Mola Mola cleaning stations is really quite a sight to see as these massive fish with these pretty good sized butterfly fish swimming around them cleaning off all the bacteria algee and other stuff that they accumulate as they're out in the deep water.

Despite their size the Mola Mola can be so very very skittish, they are probably one of the biggest fish in the ocean with only some of the sharks being bigger like the Tigers, hammerheads and the great whites but most people aren't going to get close to those fish.  The Mola Mola on the other hand are not a danger to the divers, if anything, that divers are a danger to Mola Mola as they want to get close to the sunfish and touch them which if they do they can rub off song protective covering they have on their skin which will cause them to become possibly infected, its this reason that the Mola Mola will run away quite fast if you try to get too close to it

To have the best chance of seeing the Mola Mola’s the scuba divers will find themselves deep in around the 20 to 40 meter range. 40 meters, 130 ft is the max depth for PADI Divers who have done the PADI Deep diver specialty.  Deeper than 40 meters will be decompression diving which is no longer recreational diving but technical diving. To do tec diving you can take some advanced training from PADI and other dive certification agencies that will allow you to go deeper.  Remember PADI Advanced Open water divers or Padi Adventure divers who have done the deep dive are only certified to 30 meters!

The best way to get real close to the Mola Mola is to come up on them so that they can see you the whole time and to move forward slowly, another thing that you can do is when you are going to exhale just like with other fish, what you want to do is start exhaling slowly, this lets the fish know that what's going on is not a danger to them.  The worst thing you can do is to go swimming after a Mola Mola which will guarantee that they're going to go swimming away from you very quickly, trust me they swim much  faster than you can.
